Vega

This hard bit,
like the last child
or the soil of appearances
flickers through the atmosphere
where a million leaves lift and fall,
where a woman who could have been named
after a star sits at her patio table on a green wire chair
having taken up smoking after all these years,
having become someone entirely other
than the one she was meant to be.
